Extinguishing a fire correctly, but how?
In an emergency, there is little time to think about the necessary steps. Consequently, it is necessary to internalise the correct measures to take in case of fire, to know escape and rescue routes, and to practise using fire extinguishers regularly.
On First Aid Day, we will show you the most important measures to take in the event of a fire so that you can provide first aid quickly and safely. Click on an area and learn how to:
Extinguish fire correctly.
An attempt to extinguish a fire should only be made in consideration of personal safety. This means that it must be weighed up whether an attempt to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher or wall hydrant does not pose a personal hazard. It is also important to know how to use extinguishing equipment (fire extinguishers and wall hydrants) and the fire classes.

First aid: Make the right emergency call.
In the event of a fire, the first thing to do is to keep your cool and not panic in order to take the right steps. This includes making the emergency call via the emergency number 112. It is also important to warn other people in the building, e.g. by activating the fire alarm or house alarm system.
Making an emergency call correctly - step by step
Use the 4 W-questions as a guide to making the correct emergency call.
- Where is the emergency?
- What has happened?
- Who is calling?
- Wait.
(Important: Do not hang up until prompted to do so).The more accurate the initial information, the better the fire brigade can prepare and carry out the operation.
Practice an evacuation.
In case of fire, every second counts to initiate a successful evacuation of a building. In the shortest possible time, the building must be evacuated and all persons present must go to the assembly point. Therefore, practising an evacuation is important to be prepared for the worst case scenario and to save lives.
Employers are required to conduct regular evacuation drills. An annual drill is recommended. The fire and evacuation assistants and the evacuation plan provide support in this regard.
In the run-up to the evacuation, it is relevant to check whether the basic requirements in operational fire protection regarding escape and rescue routes, alerting and fire protection and evacuation assistants have been complied with.
After the test alarm, it must be checked whether all persons are present at the assembly point. At the same time, all rooms should be checked by a fire protection and evacuation assistant within 3 minutes. Afterwards, the evacuation and any missing persons must be reported to the superior authority. In principle, the building is not to be re-entered until requested to do so.
