28 June 2023 Fire Safety

In a dangerous situation, it is important to react quickly and correctly. Rescue and fire protection symbols support this by showing the way to the nearest fire extinguisher or emergency exit. Thus they are indispensable for every business.

We provide information on which fire protection symbols are available and what to look out for.

What are fire protection symbols?

Fire protection symbols are easy-to-understand pictograms that provide information about fire protection and extinguishing equipment as well as escape and rescue routes.

They are supplemented by rescue symbols that show the way to the nearest first aid station or defibrillator, for example.

What are the specifications for fire protection symbols?

The individual affixing of rescue and fire protection symbols is to be implemented on the basis of the risk assessment. The applicable regulations on size, material and visibility must be observed.  If there is no separate safety lighting within the building, the fire protection and rescue symbols must be made of a photoluminescent material. This is the responsibility of the building operator or employer. In addition, it makes sense to check the safety markings regularly - especially in the case of structural adaptations.

Regulations at a glance:

  • Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV)
  • Technical rules for workplaces (ASR A1.3)
  • DIN EN ISO 7010
