The kitchen is the centrepiece of every home. It's not only where people cook and eat, but often also where they laugh and live. However, in addition to all the cosiness, the kitchen also harbours potential dangers, especially with regard to fires.

An unattended cooker, a forgotten pan or a faulty electrical appliance can quickly lead to a devastating fire.

It is therefore crucial to be aware of fire hazards and take appropriate measures to ensure safety in the kitchen.

Fire protection in kitchens is not only of crucial importance in the catering industry, but also at home. Common causes of fires in a kitchen are:

  • Fat fires:
Fat and oils are common ingredients in cooking and can easily catch fire if the temperature is too high. An uncontrolled grease fire can spread quickly and cause extensive damage.
  • Electrical appliances:
Faulty or overheated electrical appliances such as toasters, microwaves or coffee makers can also cause fires, especially if left unattended.
  • Carelessness:
A common cause of fires in the kitchen is carelessness. Forgotten hobs, open flames or flammable materials lying around significantly increase the risk of fires.

Fire protection in the kitchen: measures for greater safety

  • Install smoke alarms:
Smoke alarms are an indispensable tool for providing early warning of a fire. They should be installed near the kitchen and checked regularly to ensure they are working properly.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher to hand:
A fire extinguisher in the kitchen can save lives in an emergency. Make sure it is easily accessible and that you know how to use it.

  • Use kitchen utensils correctly:
Always use the right utensils when cooking and be careful not to leave flammable materials near hobs or open flames.

  • Handle fat and oil correctly:
Avoid heating fat and oil excessively and be careful when using them. In the event of a grease fire, never use water, but use a suitable lid to smother the flames or use a fire extinguisher.

  • Maintain electrical appliances:
Check electrical appliances regularly for damage and only use them according to the manufacturer's instructions. Unplug appliances when not in use to minimise the risk of short circuits.

Fire safety in the kitchen should be taken very seriously as fires in this area can quickly get out of control. By being aware of the potential dangers and taking appropriate precautions for kitchen fire safety, you can significantly reduce the risk of fires in your kitchen.
